The First Review of Die Laughing
(May 15, 2005)
I just got a copy of the first review of Die Laughing which will appear in Jersey Beat magazine. It a review by Jersey Beat publisher Jim Testa who was at the show in Brooklyn on May 7th.
SUDDEN DEATH - Die Laughing (www.suddendeath.org) Sudden Death is Tom Rockwell, a white comedic rapper with a beard, a boombox, and a microphone. I'm not enough of a hip hop aficionado to comment on his flow, but I do know funny, and this guy's funny. His targets are both obvious (New York City, American Idol, corporate business-speak) and offbeat. My favorites include "Rest Home Gangstas" about an elderly mobster terrorizing his nursing home; "CGI," about Hollywood's current obsession with special effects; a hilarious mini-rap opera on the topic of spam, including (of course) a sample of Monty Python's classic spam skit; and (for the scifi geek in me,) a rap about the new Dr. Who (which will probably sail over the heads of 75% of his audience, but gets a great response at Star Trek Conventions.) This guy is the shit, and unlike a lot of comedy albums that you play and then file away once you've heard all the jokes, it's musical enough for multiple listens. - Jim Testa
